海角社区 Women鈥檚 Hockey recruits goalie Camille Scherger

海角社区 Women鈥檚 Hockey coach Bruce Donaldson confirmed Camille Scherger has committed to play for the Panthers. Scherger is from Lloydminster, Alberta.

鈥淲hen we went looking for a goaltender, we had a number of teams out west tell us to go see Camille play,鈥 said Donaldson. 鈥淪he works especially hard, has a goals-against average of 1.92, and a save percentage of .93.鈥

Scherger began her minor hockey career in Lloydminster, playing boys hockey until Midget. She played Midget AAA this past season for Red Deer in the Alberta Female Hockey League. She led the league in minutes played, and ranked second for saves.

鈥淚 knew I wanted to become a 海角社区 Panther the day I stepped foot on the amazing campus as it had an atmosphere that I could see myself playing and learning in,鈥 said Scherger. 鈥淐harlottetown also has a hometown feel and that was important for me, coming from a smaller city in Alberta. Meeting Coach Donaldson and some future teammates helped with my decision, because I felt like part of the team from the moment we met. I am extremely excited to become a Panther and get things started in the fall.鈥

海角社区 Business students crack top ten at options trading simulation

A team of students from the 海角社区 Faculty of Business placed sixth at the 2017 Options Trading Simulation, hosted by the TMX Montreal Exchange. The top-ten finish is even more impressive given the competition included more than 2,500 undergraduate and MBA students on more than 1,100 teams from 38 Canadian universities.

海角社区's top team was 海角社区 Corp Finance 231W Hockey, made up of Cody Payne, Beni Berisha, Emily March, and Stephen Macinnis鈥攕tudents who are also varsity Panther hockey players. The team ended the competition with a portfolio balance of $199,850 (on an initial notional investment of $100,000).

鈥淭his return performance of 100%, over a ten-week trading period, is tremendous,鈥 said their professor, Dr. Andrew Carrothers. 鈥淥ur students have shown once again that they excel in competition with the very best!鈥

On how the team worked together, March explained, 鈥淲e鈥檇 meet and discuss the decisions together before they were made. We followed the trend of the price of the stock Canadian Pacific Railway, because it was the most volatile and had the potential to make the most money. We were also heavily invested in Dollarama, because of the news that they were going to accept credit cards, which led to a huge increase in the price of the stock. That was our most successful trade and led to a huge increase in our profits.鈥

鈥淲e all played hockey so we tried to incorporate that into the team identity,鈥 said Berisha. 鈥淲e all had relatively limited stock experience, so this whole simulation was a learning experience for us all.鈥

鈥淐ongratulations to the team,鈥 said Dr. Juergen Krause, dean of the Faculty of Business. 鈥淭his requires good knowledge and understanding of the underlying drivers in the market and our hockey players in business accomplished an amazing finish in a huge competitive field.鈥

Congratulations!

海角社区 observes National Day of Mourning, April 28, 2017

The National Day of Mourning, or Workers鈥 Mourning Day, originated in Canada in 1984 and is now observed annually in over 100 countries on April 28.

On this day, all levels of government, workplaces, workers, and community members honour the memory, pay respect to, and show support for those who have been adversely affected by serious incidents in workplaces that have resulted in fatalities or life-changing injuries or illnesses. The National Day of Mourning raises awareness and renews the commitment of all parties to ensure safe and healthy workplaces exist to prevent fatalities, injuries, and illnesses. Every worker has the right to return home safe and sound at the end of each workday.

Recent Canadian workers compensation statistics tell us:

  • there were 852 workplace deaths including four workers from 15鈥19 years of age, and eleven workers from 20鈥24 years of age.
  • there were 232,629 claims for lost time due to a work-related injury or disease, including 8,155 from young workers from 15鈥19 years of age.

These numbers do not include everyone directly affected by these workplace tragedies. Each worker death (and injury/illness) impacts loved ones, families, friends, and co-workers for the rest of their lives.

The PEI Federation of Labour will host a National Day of Mourning Ceremony in Memorial Hall at the Confederation Centre of the Arts beginning at 7:00 pm on April 28, 2017 for those that would like to show their support.

In observance of the National Day of Mourning, the 海角社区 will lower its flags to half-mast.

AVC Wildlife Service releases barred owl in Macphail Woods

The AVC Wildlife Service released a beautiful barred owl on Tuesday, April 25, at Macphail Woods in Orwell, PEI. The emaciated and injured owl was found by Jim Martell in his yard in Charlottetown on March 4. Mr. Martell captured the owl in a blanket and brought it to the AVC.

A physical examination revealed a severe injury to the owl鈥檚 left eye. After the bird was stabilized and had gained weight, Dr. Helene VanDoninck, of the Cobequid Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in Brookfield, Nova Scotia, performed surgery on March 21, removing the injured eye. The owl recovered from surgery very well and spent a few weeks with falconer Jamie Stride to prepare for its release.

Even with only one eye, owls can hunt in their natural environment. The birds have multiple adaptations that make them efficient predators, including silent flight, acute directional hearing, highly light-sensitive three-dimensional vision, and the ability to turn their heads left and right up to 270 degrees and almost upside down.

Saint Dunstan鈥檚 Institute of Christianity and Culture sends 海角社区 students to Rome

Ten 海角社区 students will have the learning experience of a lifetime in Italy, thanks to the Saint Dunstan's University (SDU) Board of Governors.

From May 6-27, the students will participate in a course, 鈥淩ome: Christianity and Culture,鈥 in Rome itself. Planned and organized through the Saint Dunstan鈥檚 Institute of Christianity and Culture, the course will be led by Dr. Robert Dennis, SDU Visiting Scholar, and Dr. Joe Velaidum, associate professor of religious studies. The students will be based in Rome, but they will have the opportunity to visit Pompeii, Assisi, Florence, and Siena.

鈥淭he course has tremendous depth and breadth: among its priorities is the historical development of Christianity as it emerged into Roman society and culture鈥, says Dennis. 鈥淲e will examine history, art, and philosophy from early Christianity through contemporary times in the age of Francis.鈥

A rigorous vetting process was undertaken to select the ten students who are benefiting from what could be considered as a $5,000 scholarship. 鈥淓ach participant is impressive. Four of the students also hold prestigious SDU Scholarships, and all ten of them have significant academic achievement in the Catholic Studies program,鈥 notes Dennis. 鈥淭hey come from diverse courses of study including Arts, Business, and Science.鈥

The Saint Dunstan鈥檚 Institute of Christianity and Culture will cover the cost of flights, insurance, on-the-ground transportation, accommodations, guided tours, and entrance fees at historical and cultural sites. Students are expected to cover the cost of their own meals and to pay for the course and textbooks.

鈥淔or the last few months, we鈥檝e been meeting as a group in preparation for the trip. It鈥檚 pretty incredible,鈥 says third-year student Lorelei Kenny. 鈥淚f we were in PEI, we鈥檇 have to cover those costs anyway. So there really isn鈥檛 any extra cost for the student, but there will be so many extra benefits when it comes to taking this class.鈥

The main textbook, created specifically for this class, is an e-text designed for the 21st-century learner. It includes all of the required readings, along with maps, logistical information, and short videos that cover all of the relevant historical background information for the course. The other required text is Roman Walks, which will allow students to 鈥渨ander and wonder鈥 in the Eternal City during self-guided learning time.

鈥満=巧缜 has made a strong commitment to experiential learning in its strategic and academic plans,鈥 says Dr. Robert Gilmour, Vice-President Academic and Research. 鈥淪aint Dunstan鈥檚 University, one of 海角社区鈥檚 founding institutions, was also committed to developing a strong community of fellowship and scholarship since its beginning in 1855. 海角社区鈥檚 students and academic community are all the better鈥攁nd stronger鈥攖hanks to the SDU Board of Governors鈥 continued contributions and support.鈥

On May 10, UofPEI Snapchat followers can take in some of the daily sites and scenes in Italy as students use the account to share the trip from their perspective.

In the fall of 2015, the SDU Board of Governors contributed a $1 million leadership gift to 海角社区鈥檚 Inspire campaign, with $400,000 and $100,000 dedicated to engineering and athletics respectively, two of the campaign priorities. The remaining $500,000 was used to create the Saint Dunstan鈥檚 University Institute of Christianity and Culture, which prioritizes the University鈥檚 commitment to experiential and global learning.
