Got a business idea you鈥檙e excited about? Join the Catherine Callbeck Centre for Entrepreneurship for MiniPitch on Thursday, March 20 from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. It鈥檚 a great opportunity for students to sharpen their presentation skills and develop new ideas. Prepare a three-minute pitch, face a three-minute Q&A, and participate in a two-minute feedback session to discover what you did well, where you can improve, and what steps you should take next to move forward with your idea!
The first eight presenters to register will have their spots booked, and we will have some wildcard spots at the event if you don鈥檛 get registered in time!
Join us for an exciting, useful, and hands-on workshop focused on "Elevator with Amy Andrews and Jeremy Heartz" of the Catherine Callbeck Centre for Entrepreneurship. The workshop will be taking place at Schurman Market Square on Tuesday, March 18, from 4:00--6:00 pm. This workshop will provide tools, tips, and tricks around executing an elevator pitch effectively, efficiently, and engagingly. This workshop is open to both Harry W. MacLauchlan Entrepreneurship Program participants as well as the general public. There will be pizza!

The fourth 海角社区 Board of Governors meeting of the 2024-2025 Academic Year will take place on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. in Room 102, Alumni Hall. All board meetings generally include sessions that are open to the public. The Application Review Committee invites campus community members to attend the research and teaching seminar by Dr. Hilary Caldwell, candidate for the Tier II Canada Research Chair in Children, Youth and their Educational Geographies.
Dr. Caldwell completed her PhD in Kinesiology at McMaster University (2020). Currently, Dr. Caldwell is a Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) Health System Impact Fellow (post-doctoral stream) with the Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and Dalhousie University鈥檚 Healthy Populations Institute. Dr. Caldwell's proposed research program at 海角社区 will generate evidence that can be used to update policies, programs, and environments to promote outdoor play and physical activity, with the overall goal of improving child health and well-being.

What is Three Minute Thesis?
The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) challenges thesis-based master's and doctoral students to explain their research project to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes.
Prizes for the top three presenters, and the winner of the 海角社区 3MT progresses to represent 海角社区 at the regional competition.
Participants will develop presentation and communication skills and share their research with a broad audience.
Participants will be supported by three optional workshops, including:
- Planning your 3MT
- Designing your visuals
- Presentation skills and practice
The Faculty of Graduate Studies will be hosting the 3MT competition on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Fox & Crow, W.A. Murphy Student Centre.

The chief editorial team of the 海角社区 Arts Review, a student-led publication, would like to invite members of the campus community to the book launch of Volume XIV, "Salt and Thunder". Please join us for this celebration of wonderful student writers and artists in SDU Main Building, Room 201 (Faculty Lounge) on Thursday, March 13, from 3:00-5:00 pm. Light refreshments will be served.
You will enjoy readings by the authors and meet the contributors, so come to recognize the talent of all the writers, illustrators, and photographers whose amazing work is showcased in this beautiful book.

Consent is a key part of all social interactions and healthy relationships. This is true for friends, family, sexual partners, acquaintances, coworkers, classmates, and people we don鈥檛 know yet! Making consent a priority is about respect and safety for each other and building a healthy community.
Let鈥檚 make collages! This event will take place on March 25 at 11:00 am in McMillan Hall, W.A Murphy Student Centre! You will have the chance to be creative as you share your perspectives on consent, boundaries, and respect across campus. What does consent look like to you? How does it manifest in class, at parties, in residence, at the library, at the gym, online? Why is consent important to you and to the 海角社区 community?
Choose a part of campus life and consider what roles consent can play. Create a collage on your theme using any materials you wish!
All art supplies will be provided. Everyone is welcome--students, staff, and faculty!

This is a wonderful opportunity to learn and discuss the contemporary Buddhist way of 鈥済ood life,鈥� together with Prof. Park鈥檚 international and comparative insights.
Bio: Dr. Jin Y. Park (BA, Yonsei University, Korea; MA, NY University; PhD, SUNY-Stony Brook, New York) is Professor and Chair of the Department of Philosophy and Religion at American University, Washington DC. An internationally renowned scholar in Korean (East Asian) Buddhism, Buddhist and intercultural philosophy, and modern Korean social and political philosophy, she examines issues of gender, violence, and the politics of discrimination. Marginality has been a consistent theme in her scholarship, as her works reveal power structures within thought traditions and amplify marginalized voices. She is the author, (co-)editor, or translator of over 10 books (including "Women and Buddhist Philosophy" and "Buddhism and Postmodernity"), published 60 articles, and presented about 200 keynote speeches, invited lectures, and conference papers in her expertise areas. She has also recently served as President of the American Academy of Religion, the North American Korean Philosophy Association, and the Society for Asian and Comparative Philosophy. It is with mixed emotions that we announce the retirement of Sharon Currie, Administrative Assistant for the Departments of History and Economics, after 35 years of dedicated service to our campus community. Throughout her tenure, Sharon has been a constant source of support, organization, and kindness to faculty, staff, and students alike.
Her hard work, professionalism, and unwavering commitment have made a lasting impact on all who have had the pleasure of working with her. While she will be greatly missed, we are excited for her as she begins this well-deserved new chapter in her life.

The Island Lecture Series is pleased to present a talk by Heidi Haering on Tuesday, March 18, at 7:00 pm in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building, Room 201.
Drawing on anthropological fieldwork for a master鈥檚 thesis, this talk will deal with the struggle to define the 鈥渇amily farm鈥� in PEI and how this ambiguity helps or hinders the work of farmers, agribusiness and government. It will discuss how participant definitions of the 鈥渇amily farm鈥� contrasted with how they farmed and were sometimes at odds with their ideals. This talk will also shed light on the possible reasons that agribusiness and governments look to the pastoral romanticism of 鈥渇amily farm.鈥�
Heidi Haering lives in Charlottetown and has recently completed her MA in Anthropology from Memorial University. Her thesis is entitled: 鈥淭hree keywords in the campaign against farmland consolidation and the loss of small farms through the lens of the Prince Edward Island Chapter of the National Farmers Union."

A celebration of author Deirdre Kessler鈥檚 contributions to the PEI literary community will take place on Thursday, March 20, at 7:00 pm in Schurman Market Square, Don and Marion McDougall Hall, 海角社区. The evening will be co-hosted by Dr. Richard Lemm, 海角社区 professor and Island author, and Dr. Laurie Brinklow, coordinator of the Master of Arts in Island Studies program at 海角社区. It will include short readings of Kessler鈥檚 work by other Island writers, students, and friends.
Deirdre has had a pronounced influence on the Island鈥檚 culture and literary scene as an author, educator, and advocate for Lucy Maud Montgomery鈥檚 writing. She is a former Poet Laureate of Prince Edward Island, a novelist, children鈥檚 author, non-fiction writer, and occasional radio broadcaster. For many years, she has been a sessional professor with the 海角社区 Department of English, teaching children鈥檚 literature, creative writing, and a course on L.M. Montgomery. She has supported other writers as a workshop facilitator, book editor, and teacher. She has also been involved in the L.M. Montgomery Institute from its early days and is on the editorial board of the Journal of L.M. Montgomery Studies.
