As a crucial member of the Clinical Learning and Simulation Centre (CLSC), and reporting directly to the Director of the CLSC, the Biomedical Engineer Technologist is responsible for testing, maintenance, repair, and inspection of various equipment. This role ensures compliance with regulatory and university standards while supporting simulation education by planning, developing, and managing diverse technologies and simulation environments. Key responsibilities include providing technical direction for simulation operations, maintaining and repairing medical equipment such as manikins and clinical training systems, and conducting preventative maintenance to uphold quality standards. Additionally, the Biomedical Engineer Technologist will work and assist in leading a team of Simulation Operations Specialists in leading 3D printing initiatives, contributing to the development of custom simulation aids, task trainers, and training tools. The Biomedical Engineering Technologist also offers technical support and instruction to users of the CLSC, advising on necessary equipment updates.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supporting simulation education in the planning, development, management and implementation of a wide variety of technologies and simulation spaces
  • Provides technical direction and management support for simulation operations, including preparation, maintenance and repair of simulation technologies (manikins), clinical training systems (IV pumps, ventilators), task trainers
  • Diagnoses, calibrates, repairs and performs preventative maintenance on all medical equipment to ensure quality standards are met
  • Provides medical/simulation equipment technical support and instruction to users of the CLSC. Advises on equipment updates that may be required
  • Maintains a database system to maintain records of maintenance and repair activities and records downtime of equipment
  • Inspects and tests new equipment considered for purchase
  • Assists outside vendors with major installation projects of biomedical equipment to ensure work is completed on a timely basis and in accordance with the needs of the Faculty of Medicine
  • Orders repair parts and maintains inventory levels
  • Writes reports, policies, maintenance and calibration procedures and other documentation regarding equipment maintenance, calibration, performance and downtime
  • Attends training courses on specialized equipment. Attends professional technical conferences to stay current with simulation technology
  • Utilizes computer skills for inputting and retrieval of data related to equipment purchases, maintenance and repair history
  • The Biomedical Engineer Technologist is the lead innovator and designer of custom, high-fidelity simulation task trainers and anatomical models, guiding a team of Simulation Operations Specialists in the process. This role blends engineering principles with biological sciences to create realistic training devices for healthcare professionals. By utilizing advanced materials and technology, the lead technologist develops accurate prototypes and collaborates with medical experts to refine designs. Their proficiency in 3D modeling and computer-aided design (CAD) allows for detailed anatomical representations
  • Maintains warranty information, service records and ensures all the medical equipment in Medical Laboratories within the Faculty of Medicine is up to date and functioning appropriately
  • Provides some support the 海角社区 Health and Wellness Center in acquiring new equipment and performing preventative maintenance on all medical devices within the health center. Additionally, keep a detailed log of warranties, repairs in progress, solutions, and preventative maintenance activities
  • As capacity allows, they may also be approved to maintain equipment from other 海角社区 disciplines, subject to the approval of the Director of the CLSC
  • Performing other related duties as required

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • A Diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology or Electronic Engineer Technology Diploma is required
  • Previous experience as a Biomedical Engineer with 3+ years of experience is an asset
  • Must be registered or eligible for certification with the Canadian Medical & Biological Engineering Society (CMBES)
  • Experience in a healthcare or medical laboratory is required
  • Good knowledge of microprocessor and computer-based equipment with experience in software-controlled data acquisition and processing equipment
  • Must have good communication and organizational skills including the ability to deal with and triage multiple urgent situations simultaneously
  • Must have demonstrated troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
  • Tracking and prioritizing numerous on-going tasks and requests
  • Managing time effectively to accomplish goals within the allotted time
  • Excellent interpersonal communication to exchange information with coworkers and clients in a clear and affable manner
  • Technical writing skills to allow for the creation of clear and meaningful documentation and other forms of written communication
  • Effective troubleshooting methods to efficiently trace the cause of technical problems
